• Cohort: Join with a group of students to connect about your first experience before and during your time at Harlaxton
• Pre-orientation: Arrive early with your cohort to prepare for what to expect during your semester abroad
• Ongoing support: First Scholars participate in additional academic, career, travel, and identity workshops and events throughout the term

There will be 4 themes running throughout the semester. Each of these themes will have 4 challenges and touchpoints during the semester, allowing the students to develop each thread and show clear progression in each. In addition, some of the themes will have linked guest lectures or day trips.

Academics – Goal to bravely aspire to and work towards greater academic success.

1. Intro to Library and how to use & Success Student Lab – how to find support.
2. Attend Student Success workshops – Mindset Matters, The Writing Process, Research Methods, Wellness Matters and Test Taking Tips. etc.
3. Written assignment: Submit a paragraph to be discussed with the group – i) how you have used the library or online resources or ii) Student Success Workshops and how they have helped your studies.
4. Present to group – short talk about your best piece of work at Harlaxton and what makes you proud of it

Career – Goal to bravely prepare for a career in a global market.

1. Aptitude test to see which careers suited to. Review / write resumes. What makes a good resume?
2. British Work Culture Talk & career development & Review resumes if revised.
3. How to write a good application / Apply for job. Come with completed job app next time to review.
4. Interview skills workshop / Mock job interview

Travel – Goal to bravely travel the world.

1. Travel workshop during orientation – how to research and travel cheaply.
2. London weekend with the Harlaxton Student Experience Office including an introduction to public transport. Students will also have our day trips included.
3. Challenge London! Students will do a repeat visit to London independently.
4. Challenge Europe! During the break, students will be challenged to travel more extensively.
5. The program will end with Challenge World!

Representing Identity – Goal to bravely confront your own identity and your place in the world.

1. Identity talk / Meet a Family reception.
2. Discussion on how British people represent themselves.
3. Talks from First Gen staff.
4. Ending with a revisit to self-identity and how you changed over the semester.

The application process will be the same as for all Harlaxton students. In addition, First Scholar’s will need to submit a short essay on their eligibility for the program. Our US based team will assist the students with the application process and will help them with perceived logistical roadblocks such as finding ordering their passports / visas, and registering for classes.
